John R. Thweatt

John joined the firm in 2020. However, he began his thirty year career in Elmira in 1990 working in the law office of Raymond J. Urbanski. As an associate in that that firm, John began his litigation-focused career in criminal defense, personal injury, Family Court and matrimonial, product liability, and federal civil rights cases. In mid-July, 1992, John opened his own firm in Elmira, focusing on litigation, including criminal defense, personal injury, Family Court and matrimonial, as well as real estate and contract matters. He expanded his practice to include numerous counties throughout the Southern Tier.

In 2000, John joined the Chemung County District Attorney’s Office where he prosecuted complex criminal matters, including numerous homicides and other violent felonies, firearm and drug possession, financial crimes, sex offenses, and domestic violence. Over the years, he has developed and expertise in sophisticated investigations, including the use of wiretap and other surveillance technology.

For 15 years, John was the Chief Assistant District Attorney in Chemung County. In addition, to his work as senior trial counsel and prosecutor of high-profile felony crimes, he assumed administrative duties in budget and grant management, as well as oversight of the asset forfeiture program. In total, John has litigated to jury verdict over 115 felony trials, as well as countless misdemeanor and bench trials.

Originally, from Buffalo, NY, John moved to Chemung County at a young age and continues to live there with his wife and two step-daughters. Although John is an avid sports fan and military history buff, most of his “down time” is spent tending his wife’s horses and chickens.
